Background

Memes are a fundamental convergence of word & image. They are both the ultimate “modernist dream” of (usually) photography combined with imagery and a post-modern expression of vernacular & democratic aesthetic sensibilities. They are also a new and largely unexplored visual space. Comedy, through which memes usually flow, is a subtle, and difficult art. For all these reasons, we can explore memes as a way to free ourselves from the burden of the history of graphic design. Also I get many more of the Purchase Memes now. ︎

Requirements & Rules

  • All memes must be at least 1000px by 1000px
  • You must create 10 memes
  • Submit them into this Google Slide document.
  • Do not label them with your name yet.
  • At some point you may have to express something observational like “when I...” or use a colloquialism like “bruh,” but attempt to avoid, at most costs, common meme text templates like “my feeling/reaction when” “iight, I’mma head out” and the like.
  • If you have trouble generating imagery but have some writing, find someone who is having trouble generating words and work together with them.
  • The memes cannot contain the following typefaces:
    • Verdana
    • Tahoma
    • Arial
    • Futura
    • Helvetica
    • Roboto
    • Georgia
    • Courier
    • Calibri
    • Times
    • Impact
    • Papyrus

Resources

Websites for Typography︎
Here are some texts you can pull from, if you’re not sure where to begin︎
Here are some online tools︎
  • Sigil Generator
  • (what we used briefly for the logo component of your projects)
  • BeFunky (unleash your inner graphic designer! I assume these are gross but curious how far they can go, or how much we have to “compete” with them)
  • ASCII Type Generator
  • (You’ll need a monospaced typeface if you want to use the output from here in a program like Illustrator or inDesign)
  • This Person Does Not Exist(interesting and frightening tool that generates pictures of people that don’t exist procedurally)
  • Axis Praxis(Website where you can try out variable typefaces)
Places to look for images︎
  • Pexels
    (free stock image/video site)
  • Pixabay
  • (another one)
  • Unsplash
  • (yet another one)
  • The Noun Project
  • (I kinda hate that this website exists, you may be forced to use this in your journey as a designer of graphics, but it does have a comprehensive set of icons for anything you can imagine)
  • SenshiStock Sketch (This is an amazing resource if you don’t have access to live drawing classes, but some of the photographs are kind of inevitably goofy)
