Reading: Do Gender-Neutral Pronouns Need Their Own Glyphs?

An animation of Bumpy, a typeface designed as a “result of a research about the relationship between gender stereotypes and typefaces.”

Backgroun

I have been looking through Looking Closer no.5, while I think there are many interesting topics to discuss and the discussions in class have been rich, to me it feels as though for many of the ideas, their time has come and gone. I feel as though I owe it to you all to make sure we discuss some more current ideas. These also are, for what it is worth, quicker and less dense readings.

The reading, linked below, is a starting point for discussions around gender identity, its representation through language, the technological substrates through which those ideas flow and the related historical cases.

Perhaps this is intrisically clear, but I would like the discussion to be more than a yes or no answer to the question that is the title of the article. To the extent people feel comfortable I’d like to talk about your personal experience with design, language, and gender identity, gendered-ness of type, your relationship to technology (positive or negative) as it relates to your expression of your self (as opposed to more generic self-expression), and the like.

Notes must be uploaded by 04/27/2023 and you should be ready to discuss by then in class
