How it will work

The contest will have two phases, the Jenga portion, which will cut to a Top 4. In the Jenga portion you’ll simply play Jenga in groups of 4. There will be one central game of Jenga going on for maximum hypeness. If it ends up being too short, we’ll do 2 out of 3 and if it’s too long I may give you a slow play warning. The winner or each round becomes part of the Top  4.

Here’s the twist, the Jenga blocks will be marked (on the outside, i.e. it influences your block choice) and the color indicates an activity. When you remove a block from the stack it is a “vote” for that activity. One of the Top 4 activities will be decided subjectively, the other objectively
The prize will be an elevation of your grade by one full letter; no questions asked, no holds barred. This does not excuse you from the submitting a final project.

Just in Case

If you haven’t played Jenga before, here’s how

Activity #1︎Button

With this activity, we’ll use Figma or Adobe XD to create a button. We’ll take 20 - 40 minutes (this will depend on how long the Jenga portion takes, and other forces impinging on the class, namely the Senior Project Presentations).

When complete, I will judge the buttons based on these criteria
  • clarity of affect without it being explained(sad, scared, funny, etc)
  • creativity within the limitations
  • level of apparent understanding of the underlying program
  • level of apparent understanding of human interface design

Here are the rules︎
  • The button must have at least 2 states (pressed and released)
  • You must remove any button hinting (blue outlines)here’s how you do it in Adobe XD and here’s how in Figma
  • The button and interacting with it, must produce or have an affect, it should be funny, sad, angry, etc. and that is achieved by how the button or content related to it changes.
  • All imagery must be produced within Figma or XD. No drawings, memes, etc.
  • No text is allowed on or around the buttons.
  • Anonymously submit the link to your button into this document.

Activity #2︎LED Race

In this activity, you’ll simply wire up 5 LED’s to a breadboard (no arduino necessary), with a breadboard power supply.

Here are the rules︎
  • All the LED’s must light up
  • All the LED’s must have a 220 Ohm resistor in front of them.
  • You cannot receive assistance of any kind in any way.(internet, other students, me, anything)
  • All 4 contestants must face away from each other (any looking at anyone else’s breadboard will count as a disqualification)
  • You are allowed to check your power supply but you cannot turn it on again until all 5 LED’s are wired up on your breadboard.
  • You’ll have 30 seconds to arrange the elements from your kit how you want them to be set up.
  • If you want to borrow someone else’s kit so that everyone has an Elegoo kit, that’s fine.
  • You must call “time” clearly and vociferously and then, all contestants will take their hands off their boards and you’ll be allowed to turn on the power. If all the LED’s don’t light up, we’ll continue the contest.

In the event people finish so close it is hard to determine, these factors will help determine the winner
  • Whoever has the fewest burnt out LED’s will win.
  • Bonus awarded for using a pattern with your LED’s (like Green, Red, Green, Red, Green and gettin’ seasonal)
  • Using red jumper wires for power and black for ground will give you a bonus.
  • Bonus awarded for clarity with which you set up your circuit
