Discussion no.09, The Danger of AI is Weirder than you Think

Link to the Viewing

Introduction

In the interest of preparing for a new project, we'll watch Janelle Shane's talk about AI. Janelle is a researcher (that is to say, not directly invested by working for a company like OpenAI, as far as I can tell) who talks about the frailty of AI.

In this case, she talks about use cases that lead to unusual results and the clear limitations and unusual instances of AI and humans interacting.

Things to Think About

  • What are the cases Janelle Shane cites for unusual or "weird" AI responses?
  • What times have you received aggravating or frustrating responses from an AI like ChatGPT? What did you do to "fix" the issue? How have you changed the way you communicate with AI to ameliorate issues you experience with it? Has this effected your day to day communication?
  • In work you have made creatively, have you experienced a tool behaving in an unintended way? Did you correct this or work with this misunderstanding?
