James Edmondson → Changing Out of Your Typographic Sweatpants
Who is James Edmondson?
James Edmondson is a prolific type designer who you may know from his foundry OH no Type co. ↗, and typefaces like Hobeaux, Casserole, Chee, Covik, Degular, etc. (many of which are available on Adobe Fonts) and for co-founding Future Fonts. ↗
What is Typographics?
Typographics ↗ is a yearly conference run at the Cooper Union (for the Advancement of Science and Art). It has some association with Type@Cooper ↗, the type design focused continuation program also run by Cooper Union. This is where this talk took place
Questions to Think About
- What is your opinion about fonts like Helvetica (one of the "hits" that is mentioned)? Has it changed since being in graphic design?
- How do you view type design as a profession? How does James change or confirm that view?
- How do you view the levity with which James talks about type? Cynical? Reverent?
- What other fonts might you consider "hits" in this way, that don't have the same look or appeal as Helvetica?
- What might be "one-hit-wonders" in the typographic world, to you? And why?
