01. "/ˈmɛni/"
Introduction
This first short project is called "/ˈmɛni/." These characters are from the International Phonetic Alphabet. I'm using this because, all the projects in this class will be based on things my son, Felix, says. He says "many" when he plays with his blocks or Duplos and dumps them on the floor and kicks them around with his feet. Lately he says "many" when he does this. This seems to be both, him getting an understanding of the idea of "many"-ness as well as emjoying the kinesthetic sensation of blocks.
Objectives
As such the goals of this project are to:
- gain a kinesthetic sense of typography.
- create a full (single case) typeface together.
- utilize no digital typographic tools to make the actual letterforms in order to understand the affordances of the tool we are using.
In-Class Exercise
- There will be 4 templates in class.
- 4 letters at a time will be available. We will use 1/2 in. gaff tape in order to produce letters. You will place letters in various places within the grid.
- We will decide, with some guidance, on which letters to choose when.
For Homework
- Design (at least) 5 posters with (only) the class typeface.
- They should be at least 11x17 inches and trimmed if necessary.
- They should be ready to print the beginning of class next session.
- They should be uploaded for grading by next week.
