02. Translation

Summary

As we move forward, I will give you some ideas for things to focus on, or options you have in your typeface designs.

One of them is translation, a method of stroke construction where a pen of a fixed width, and mostly the same angle is moved, or "translated" leading to the characteristic proportions and contrast we associate with several kinds of calligraphy.

The angle of the shape that we translate informs what we call stress. Typically, a broad-nibbed pen is held at a 30 degree angle for Roman Caps or Foundational hand, and typically around 45 degrees for blackletter.
