(Week 08) Discussion, Spacing, Legibility, & Code

Introduction

The readings we'll look at briefly in class are based on implicit meanings and cultural constructions that are part of how we process written language. The readings are about the following topics

  • Code Cultural ideas around text organization and heirarchy and how we accept them. This might be that, in English text is typically left-to-right, or more radical artwork of the 20th Century that sought to break conventions around type in order to "awaken" the reader
  • Legibility and Readability This encompasses not only, how letters in typefaces are constructed, but how the information they contain is organized and how it best servers the reader, user, etc.
  • Typography: Sizing, Spacing, and Shaping Introduces some new concepts around spacing between letters (letterspacing), words (wordspacing), lines (leading) and how blocks of text can be arranged (alignment and rags).
