Project No.01, Handout no.05, Refined Prototypes
Refined Prototyping
This week, further edit and refine the visual elements and composition of your Project 01
prototype. Taking into account the possibilities for color and materiality that we explored
during class, determine how you will fabricate the final composition that you’ll submit for
evaluation (due at the beginning of the seventh class (date)—and begin making it. Work
on two or three versions at the same time to test and compare different possibilities.
The final presentation may be fabricated in almost any way you feel will best represent
your vision and support your intended communication objectives:
- A seamless, single color laserprint of a digitally-created image file
- A color laserprint with added (physical) two-dimensional collage materials, and/or direct physical intervention like painting or drawing onto the surface
- A color laserprint with collaged, two-dimensional and applied three-dimensional elements (as well as direct painting or drawing onto the surface)
- A collage of two-dimensional, physical materials without any digitally-printed elements (as well as direct painting or drawing onto the surface)
- An assemblage of only physical, collaged materials and three-dimensional elements
- An entirely three-dimensional assemblage of three-dimensional elements (which may include two-dimensional material [for instance, as a background surface], whether physically made or digitally printed)
Any fabrication idea you choose to pursue may include framing or other mounting and presentation possibilities, like shadow-box or diorama, or mounting on a base other than illustration board (for example, mounting on a piece of wood or steel). — For class, bring prototype options you are testing as works in progress for discuss and continued development during class.
Project 02: Identify a Topic
The semester’s second project will revisit a lot of the ideas you explored in Project 01, but in the context of typography—the visualization of writing, or text. This week, you’ll need to figure out what that text (and the project) are going to be about... So identify a topic that you’d like to communicate about. It can be as broad and general or as specific as you like, and it can be about anything. Once you choose a topic, research it in-depth, just as you did for the first project. This research can include both text and images; organize it for yourself in an understandable way, following the protocols we’ve established.
Readings and Resources
Familiarize yourself with the concepts in this week’s material and apply your understanding to the assignments you’re working on in the homework. Additionally, make note of any concepts that you find confusing, or have questions about—as well as insights you discover that pertain to the work you’re doing—to share and discuss as a class.
