Project No.02, Handout no.01, Typeface Workshop

Project 02: Creating a Communal Typeface

For this week, in class, we will work together to create a communal typeface. We'll split into group whose job it will be to create a set number of glyphs (letters, numbers, characters). We'll start with capitals and work out from there. We'll look at the output together and decide if we want to change some characters. Subsequent to class, I will take the work from class and convert it into a "real" typeface you can download an use. Additionally, we'll go over the basics of using Adobe Illustrator together.

Homework

With this work, you'll begin to create compositions with your word, in fonts that you choose. For homework, you'll create (at least) 10 (ten) square (10" by 10") compositions with your word. You should have at least:

  • Five compositions, with your word in the class typeface
  • Five compositions, with typefaces of your choice in Adobe Illustrator

Considerations

Remember our discussions about Symmetry/Asymmetry Composition and other Gestalt principles. Consider how scale, composition, rotation, etc. effect the meaning of your word.

Readings and Resources

Familiarize yourself with the concepts in this week’s material and apply your understanding to the assignments you’re working on in the homework. Additionally, make note of any concepts that you find confusing, or have questions about—as well as insights you discover that pertain to the work you’re doing—to share and discuss as a class. 10x10 Glyph Template
