Project 02: Vector Decoration

For this next step in the project, we'll continue refining our skills in Adobe Illustrator in order to create decoration, pattern and environments to surround, ornament, and augment our figures and compositions. Use this as an opportunity to re-inforce your skills, and to try things that might have been "scarier" or more daunting last week. I would encourage you to maintain and develop the style rules of your existing compositions as well as expand your technical knowledge.

Homework

Use your burgeoning skills in Adobe Illustrator to create several decorative elements:

  • Two (2) different borders added to an existing compositions (this may require you to reposition or reconfigure an existing composition).

    • This could be, but is not limited to:

      • A border for the whole image
      • A border to surround text elements or separate them from a character
      • An ornate speech bubble if a "little guy" is speaking your word
  • Five (5) different examples of decoration or ornamentation added to your existing compositions

    • This could be but is not limited to:

      • Ornate clothes, armor, accessories, or jewelry on one of your little guys.
      • An item a "little guy" is holding (a bag, a weapon, a magical sword)
      • A more abstract adornment for the character (lines or squiggles indicating confusion for example)
  • Five (5) different examples of "structures" or other elements added to your existing compositions. This is a little more ambiguous, and depends to some extent on what you're doing with your other characters.

    • This could be but is not limited to:

      • A building, gazebo, or other element near, or surrounding your existing characters.
      • Bespoke lettering in the style of the characters added near or around them.
      • A background, environmental element, a hill with flowers, sun and clouds
      • Small animals or "familiars" for your existing "little guys"
  • The final deliverables for homework will be the following:

    • Five (5) existing compositions modified with the above changes, saved as .png
    • Five (5) new compositions recombing the above changes, or with new elements, saved as .png

Readings and Resources

Familiarize yourself with the concepts in this week’s material and apply your understanding to the assignments you’re working on in the homework. Additionally, make note of any concepts that you find confusing, or have questions about—as well as insights you discover that pertain to the work you’re doing—to share and discuss as a class.
