Project 03: Group Decisions and Risograph animation

For this project, you will be split into groups and each group will pool their collective powers to create a short (at least 12 frames) animation. First split into your groups as outlined below.

Groups

If you absolutely have an issue with the groups as presented, please let me know, and work with another group to make an equitable "trade."

Deciding your animation

Think of what your subject matter might be. If you are having trouble think of your word, object or focus from project 1 or project 2. Review your work together and decide a focus.

Technical Considerations

  • Risograph has a limited color palette dictated by the drums that are available. You can make other colors through mixing. You should have access to:

    • hot pink
    • yellow
    • cornflower blue
    • navy blue
    • red
    • black
    • gold (really a light brown color)
  • You will need to produce a 'contact sheet' with all your images, this will be essentially a smaller version of your images. This is neither a good or bad thing but consider that scale will be an issue.

  • Use texture and techniques like bitmapping, or adding noise to prevent large flat areas of color (that may transfer more easily)

  • Every print will not register perfectly, account, to some degree for this (ie hairline border on a large flat shape might not show up perfectly each print)

Homework

For next week, produce a storyboard of the animation, which indicates:

  • what is happening in each frame
  • who is doing what (note in clear terms the division of labor)
  • how you might divide or combine colors

You may produce this by any means: digital (Illustrator or Photoshop), drawing or painting that is photographed or scanned, or some combination thereof.

If you overlap with some technical issue we will address it next week. These technical issues should become clearer as we use the risograph.
